How to Build a Critical Thinking Routine That Sticks
Most teachers have tried to teach critical thinking. Fewer have succeeded.
Not because they don't know what it is — the previous articles in this series covered the definition, the five core moves, how to give feedback that works, and how to assess what students can actually do. You know the theory. The problem is harder: how do you make critical thinking a regular practice, not a one-off lesson?
The answer is a routine. Not a unit. Not a project. A routine — something you do with students consistently, until the mental moves become automatic.
If you've been following this series, you're not short on ideas. You're short on structure. This is the structure — the piece that ties everything together.
Why One-Off Lessons Don't Work
Critical thinking is a skill. Like playing an instrument or speaking a language, it requires repeated practice under varied conditions. A single lesson on argument construction doesn't make students better at argument construction any more than one piano lesson makes someone a musician.
The education system treats critical thinking as a topic to cover. You do a Socratic seminar, you grade it, you move on. Next unit, different topic. The thinking moves — identifying assumptions, evaluating evidence, tracing implications — never get practiced to the point of automaticity.
The result: students can perform critical thinking when you prompt them to, and then stop performing it the next day.
The fix: design a routine that makes the thinking moves non-negotiable, every session, for every student.

A good routine has four components. Most attempted routines fail because they're missing one or more of them.
1. Consistent format — students know what to expect, so attention goes to the thinking, not figuring out the activity.
2. Scaffolded difficulty — the routine gets harder over time, so initial wins become deeper analysis.
3. Visible thinking — what students do in the routine is observable and gradable, so you can track development.
4. Low stakes per session, high stakes over time — each routine instance shouldn't feel like a test, but the cumulative pattern should reveal genuine growth (or the lack of it).

The Four Moves That Go in the Routine
Before designing the format, you need the content. Every critical thinking routine, regardless of subject or grade level, should train these four moves:
Move 1: State the claim, then find the assumption.
Students identify what's being asserted and what's being taken for granted. This is the foundation of argument evaluation — and the move most students skip because they don't know it's required.
Move 2: Ask what the evidence actually shows.
Students distinguish between evidence presence and evidence quality. A citation isn't a demonstration. A statistic isn't proof. The routine should make students slow down and ask: What kind of evidence is this, and does it actually support this specific claim?
Move 3: Trace the implications forward.
Students follow the argument's logic: If this is true, what follows? And what follows from that? Flaws in reasoning often show up one step beyond the immediate claim — not in what's said, but in what the argument requires to be true.
Move 4: State the strongest counterargument.
Students articulate the best version of the position they disagree with. Not a strawman. Not a weak objection. The hardest version to dismiss. This is where real thinking happens — and it's the move most students never practice.

Three Routine Formats That Scale
Format 1: The Five-Minute Opening (Daily)
Start every class with a structured prompt that takes five minutes and requires all four moves. This works best in IB/AP courses where you're meeting students four or five times per week.
The format: Give students a claim — from current events, a source you're reading in class, a historical controversy, a scientific finding. Students write (not discuss) for five minutes:
- What assumption does this claim rest on?
- What kind of evidence would strengthen it?
- What would have to be true for this claim to be false?
- What's the strongest counterargument — the one you can't easily dismiss?
You collect and read these. You don't grade them for correctness — you grade them for engagement with all four moves. A student who writes three sentences of genuine reasoning on one of these prompts shows more critical thinking than a student who writes a page of confident assertion.
Before: Class starts with a bell-ringer about the reading. Students answer comprehension questions — who said what, when did it happen. They practice recall. The thinking moves don't appear. Class starts by defaulting to the lowest cognitive level.
After: Class starts with a claim prompt. Students write for five minutes. You circulate and see which students are identifying real assumptions versus writing general agreement. The routine surfaces thinking gaps in real time, before the discussion begins.
Format 2: The Exchange (Weekly)
Once per week, pairs of students exchange arguments on a question and question each other's reasoning. This is the format that ThinkingEngine is built around — structured peer dialogue that makes the four moves visible.
The format: Each student takes a position on a question. They have two minutes to write their argument. Then Partner A presents. Partner B's only job is to ask questions — not to agree, disagree, or respond. Partner B's questions should probe: What's your evidence? What assumption are you making? What would show you're wrong?
After five minutes, they swap. Then they discuss: Which questions were hardest to answer? Where did your argument hold and where did it bend?
You circulate and listen. The quality of the questions tells you everything. Students who ask specific questions about evidence and assumptions are doing the work. Students who say I agree with everything are not.
Before: Weekly discussion rounds where the same two or three students dominate, others nod along, and the teacher tries to involve the quiet ones. Surface-level agreement gets mistaken for understanding. No visible thinking data.
After: Structured exchange with question-only rounds. You hear: What evidence do you have for that claim? What would someone who disagrees say? You hear it from every student, not just the confident ones. You have visible, trackable thinking evidence across the full class.
Format 3: The Revision Cycle (Biweekly)
Every two weeks, students write an argument on a knowledge question, encounter counterevidence, respond in writing, and then revise their original argument. You grade the initial, the response, and the revision — plus a metacognitive reflection.
The format: Student writes Position A on a question (Is memory reliable? Does economic inequality cause political instability? Is privacy a fundamental right?). You give them three peer arguments that disagree. Student writes a response to those arguments — not a summary, an actual engagement with the counterevidence. Then they revise Position A and write a one-paragraph reflection: what changed and why.
You grade three things: the initial argument quality, the quality of the response, and the metacognitive reflection. The revision gap — the difference between v1 and v2 — is the most useful signal of all.
This is the format with the highest setup cost and the highest data value. It works best in full-year IB or AP courses where you have time to run it multiple times and build a portfolio.
The Before/After: What Changes When You Have a Routine
In an IB Theory of Knowledge Class
Before:
Class meets three times per week. Once per week, there's a discussion. The rest is content delivery. Students write essays at the end of the unit. The essays are the only data on thinking quality. By the time you see a thinking problem, it's end-of-unit. The problem has been building for six weeks.
After:
Daily five-minute opening prompts train the four moves. Weekly exchanges surface which students are applying them and which aren't. You adjust your facilitation in response — pushing harder on students who are performing reasoning without doing it, giving more support to students who are genuinely struggling. You see thinking gaps in week two, not week six.
In an AP English Language Class
Before:
Students write rhetorical analysis essays. You grade them. You return them. Students look at the grade, not the feedback. The thinking errors — weak claims, missing evidence, unstated assumptions — persist across the semester. They write the same errors in February that they wrote in September.
After:
The revision cycle replaces one-shot essays. Students write, receive peer counterarguments, respond in writing, revise. You grade the initial, the response, and the revision. The metacognitive reflection forces them to name what changed. Errors that persisted for months disappear within two cycles because students have to confront them directly, not just receive comments on them.
The Three Mistakes That Kill Routines
Mistake 1: No consistency.
You start the routine enthusiastically in week one. By week four, it happens sometimes. By week eight, it's gone. This happens when the routine doesn't have a structural place in the class — it's an optional enrichment activity, not a core component. Fix: schedule the routine the same way you schedule the warm-up. If the bell-ringer is non-negotiable, the thinking routine is non-negotiable.
Mistake 2: No difficulty progression.
The routine stays the same difficulty all year. Students get good at the first version and stop thinking. Fix: build in harder versions of the same format. Week one: claim is clearly stated. Week four: claim is implied, assumption must be inferred first. Week eight: multiple competing claims, students choose which to evaluate. The format is consistent. The cognitive demand is not.
Mistake 3: No visible data.
You run the routine but don't collect or track what students produce. Students do the work, you see it in the moment, but there's no record and no longitudinal view. Fix: keep a simple tracking sheet — date, student, move assessed (1-4), notes. After ten sessions, you have a picture of each student's development. After twenty, you have a trend.
